Dory is a hard combination to find: she pays careful attention to vocal technique and general musicianship, but is supportive of work in any genre, not just classical.
- Colleen Swanson, Mezzo Soprano The Voice Lesson - What do we do?
Each student comes to voice lessons with their own vocal experience so individual lessons will differ. However, there are some basics every student will engage with in the lesson. Each time we meet we will begin with some movement and breathing exercises and a variety of vocal warm-ups. We will then dive into strengthening whichever aspects of your technique need attention, focusing on coordinating the body and mind to produce an efficient, clear and beautiful vocal tone. I use a classical bel canto approach, welcoming art song, opera folk, jazz and legit musical theater. I will work with you to determine what your short and long-term goals are for singing and what repertoire you wish to sing, and we will develop a game-plan together. Singing lessons are about learning good technique, but the voice is also intertwined with our emotional health and well-being. I strive to create a safe environment for each student to explore their artistic expression without judgement. I firmly believe that every voice is unique, important and deserves to be heard. Each month there will be an all-studio gathering called the Studio Class, which all students are required to attend. This is an opportunity for students to sing through their repertoire with piano accompanist, receive positive feedback from their peers and record themselves and their accompaniment for home practice *Please bring a water bottle, any music you are currently working on and a recording device to each lesson and to studio class! |
